Calculating the Area and Perimeter of a Square

How to find the area of a square:
The area of a square can be found by multiplying the base times itself.
This is similar to the area of a rectangle but the base is the same length as the height.
If a square has a base of length 5 inches its area is 5*5=25 square inches

How to find the perimeter of a square:
The perimeter of a square is the distance around the outside of the square. A square has four sides of equal length. The formula for finding the perimeter of a square is 4*(Length of a Side).

Calculating the Area and Perimeter of a Square

Example

Let a square of base d =3 cm, calcualte the area S and the perimeter P of the square.

The area of the square is S = d*d = 3*3= 9 cm^2

The perimeter of the square is P = 4*d = 4*3= 12 cm
